This is the view one sees when standing in another city — another country — Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Detroiters once crossed into Windsor as casually as driving to another neighborhood. Windsor was the "quick international getaway," and many families crossed the border weekly or even daily for dinner, shopping, nightlife, and cultural events. Residents had the option of either using the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel or the Ambassador Bridge. No passport or special documents were required, just a driver's license (or birth certificate) and a friendly wave at the border. That changed in the mid-2000s when new federal security laws reshaped all U.S. land-border travel. Now, the U.S. requires proof of citizenship and identity for all travelers entering from Canada, with passports recommended for adults.
