Mackinac Bridge

The Mackinac Bridge spans five miles across the Mackinac Straits. It connects the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan and was first opened for business in 1957. It is currently the 5th longest suspension bridge in the world. It is commonly viewed from the nicely manicured grounds of the Fort Michilimackinac State Park next to the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse.

A calm shoreline opens into a world of deep, contemplative blue. The park in the foreground — humble benches, a lone barrel bin, birch trees shifting between seasons — creates a gentle pause before the eye drifts outward. Beyond the grass, the water gathers into layered hues, each one a quiet breath of color.

Across this expanse rises the suspension bridge, its towers poised with architectural grace and its cables sweeping in elegant arcs. It stands not merely as a structure, but as a gesture of connection — an invitation to cross, to wander, to imagine what waits on the far shore.

This puzzle reignited memories of the several trips I took driving across this bridge. I remember feeling excited to cross and imagining what lies ahead as you cannot see land. At times, crossing the bridge was a little intimidating. Some people feel anxious about crossing the bridge, which is a natural fear, given the bridge's scale, design, weather exposure and sensory experience. The bridge rises to about 200 feet above the water. This elevation can feel overwhelming for people with a fear of heights. Drivers can feel the vehicle sway slightly when there are strong winds, often exceeding 30 mph, especially during storms or winter conditions. Parts of the inner lanes are made of open steel grates where you can see the water below. The bridge has no center barrier between opposing traffic, and the guardrails are relatively low. In contrast, if you are standing on land, sitting on a bench, under a birch tree, the sight is beautiful.

The completed puzzle truly becomes an experience of stillness and discovery. Piece by piece, the scene reveals its harmony: human design meeting natural calm, engineering meeting sky, the everyday transformed into something worth lingering over. It is a landscape assembled with intention, meant to be savored, displayed, and remembered.
