The Story Behind the Puzzle

Saguaro Forms & Cactus Flowers

The puzzle box features Frank Lloyd Wright's "Saguaro Glass Design," a striking geometric composition originally created as a stained glass window panel. The artwork is built from precise vertical lines, stepped rectangles, and circular motifs, arranged in a rhythmic pattern that evokes the tall silhouettes of saguaro cacti rising in the desert.

Wright created Saguaro Forms and Cactus Flowers in 1927/1928 as one of a series of unpublished magazine covers. In the form of a backlit art glass mural constructed by the architect's apprentices, Saguaro Forms now graces the lobby of the Arizona Biltmore resort in Phoenix.

This puzzle I completed years ago, possibly one of my first. And, of course what fascinated me was the array of colors, the clean lines, balanced proportions and repeating motifs. The geometric blocks, repeated shapes and color bands creates an engaging puzzle without me becoming frustrated. There is a sense of order and rhythm that is quite satisfying after completion.

The palette is vivid and architectural: sunset reds and oranges, cool greens and blues, and earthy browns, all balanced with Wright's signature sense of proportion and harmony.

About the Artist

Frank Lloyd Wright / Saguaro Glass Design

Widely hailed as America's greatest architect ever, Frank Lloyd Wright was a peerless designer in two dimensions as well as in three. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, Wright produced over 1,000 architectural designs, reshaping American architecture through his philosophy of organic design — the belief that buildings should grow naturally from their environment. Beyond buildings, Wright was a prolific designer of furniture, textiles, stained glass, and decorative art, believing that every element of space should contribute to a unified aesthetic. His stained glass window designs, often called "light screens," feature geometric abstractions inspired by nature — precisely the lineage from which Saguaro Glass Design emerges. His work remains celebrated for its innovation, harmony, and the belief that art and architecture can elevate everyday life.
