The Story Behind the Puzzle
Ocean
Everyone knows I love the water, the ocean, ocean waves, warm weather, hot sun, sandy beaches, and everything else you would find on a tropical island. This puzzle depicts that exact place, but much more private and secluded.
I have traveled to several locations where there are wonderful sandy beaches. Starting with my home state, Michigan, where my first beach experience as a child was at the Belle Isle beach in Detroit. I have been to the other Michigan beaches including Oscoda, Traverse City, and Mackinaw City. One weekend in 2024, I beach-hopped in West Michigan, where there are miles of freshwater shorelines in vibrant coastal towns. Stops included beaches in New Buffalo, Union Pier, Luna Pier, Bridgman, St. Joseph, and Benton Harbor, Michigan.
Throughout my life, as an adult, I have visited several beaches outside of Michigan. In the '80s, I frequented Venice Beach in Los Angeles and Malibu Beach in California. While visiting Portland, Oregon, I remember driving by myself for 2 hours to get to Seaside Beach on the Pacific Ocean. I have visited beaches in Florida located in Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Miami. One of my favorite beaches — where I discovered a love for blue crab — is Perdido Beach in Orange Beach, Alabama. I have visited a lovely beach in Lewes, Delaware, where I found a wonderful jigsaw puzzle store. (I actually stayed in this store for 3 hours perusing their puzzles.) In 2025, I traveled from Atlanta, Georgia through the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina, to arrive at Virginia Beach, Virginia.
I have also sat on beaches in Mexico: Puerto Vallarta, Belize, and Cancun. But my most favorite beaches are in the Caribbean, where the water is warm and crystal blue — like in the Bahamas, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and Grand Turks & Caicos.
As I was putting this puzzle together, each puzzle piece resonated a part of nature that is so real. I would never be able to paint such a wonderful piece of art, but piecing together this puzzle is as close as I can get. The final completed puzzle looks so real to me, with its natural beauty uplifting my spirits. I imagined myself on this beach, hearing the ocean waves crash against the sandy beach and rocks. I also imagined myself running on the hot sand, out into the warm water, swimming and floating there for hours. This is where I go — until I can travel to my next beach destination.

About the Artist
Scott Christensen
Scott L. Christensen is a landscape painter whose work is driven by necessity and deep connection to nature. Painting is not simply the passion of Scott Christensen, it's his necessity, like breathing. Mind and body attuned, he moves through the process of creating each landscape just as a river flows over rocks and around islands, all the while seeking a mellifluous whole. Obstacles of composition, color, and tone are transformed into opportunities with each stroke of his brush. Christensen's goal is to compose an aggregate vision of nature's beauty, while also delighting in the journey. "The process alone," he says, "is worth the effort." Born in 1962, Christensen grew up in Lander, Wyoming, a place of extreme geography and wild beauty. There his aesthetic developed. After a severe football injury in college ended his athletic path, he discovered painting through time spent with his grandfather, an amateur oil painter. This turning point led him to pursue art with the same discipline he once applied to sports. Christensen's landscapes balance tradition and innovation. He draws inspiration from masters like Levitan, Mucha, Sorolla, and Zorn — whose limited palette influenced Christensen's own approach — while also weaving in subtler influences from literature, music, and his athletic background. Christensen aims to capture nature's beauty and evoke the same sense of uplift he experiences outdoors, offering viewers a resonant, contemplative experience even when they cannot be in nature themselves. "In many ways, I'm not really painting beaches. I'm painting a state of being. I know how much standing alone on a beach at sunrise can change the way we see our problems, our possibilities, and even ourselves. I also know that art has the power to bring some of that feeling into our homes and into our daily lives. Art has the power to remind us what really matters."
