The Story Behind the Puzzle

Sunrise on the River

A warm, glowing sunrise stretches across the horizon as gentle waves reflect bands of gold and amber. In the distance, a lone ship appears in silhouette — dark, quiet, and steady — its form softened by the fading light. A single bird glides overhead, adding a touch of motion to the tranquil scene. The composition blends serenity with a hint of mystery, capturing the timeless beauty of a vessel moving across open water at day's beginning.

This puzzle reminds me of watching numerous vessels that travel on the Detroit River. One of my favorite pastimes is to go to Belle Isle and sit by the water's edge of the Detroit River to watch the bulk freighters and carriers go by. The ship's silhouette in the puzzle specifically reminds me of the Bob-Lo boats that my family and I frequented during the 1960s and 1970s.

For nearly a century, the Bob-Lo boats carried generations of Detroiters down the river toward summer adventures on Bob-Lo Island. The SS Columbia and SS Ste. Claire were elegant excursion steamers — with tall, tiered decks stacked like a wedding cake, open-air promenades, railings, and a graceful, nostalgic profile. The Bob-Lo boats were built for atmosphere: filled with music, dancing, concessions, and a festive vibe. They were iconic symbols of summer in Detroit's waterfront history. Their last season of operation came in 1991, closing the chapter on one of the region's most beloved traditions.

I invite you into the serenity this puzzle evokes — depicting a lone ship gliding across a golden horizon, bathed in soft light that transforms the moment into pure, effortless calm.
